1924 Gallaher British Champions of 1923 Overview
True to the set’s name, these cards were issued in 1924 and picture some of the top British athletes from 1923.
The cards feature color images of athletes and are distinctive for their gold-colored borders. While most tobacco cards of this era had simple white borders, these gold-colored ones helped give this issue a distinctly different look. Backs note offer a player’s biography and also that they were issued by Gallaher, a popular UK tobacco company.
A number of different sports were covered in the set. Primarily, boxing, tennis, golf, soccer, and wrestling were all featured along with other minor sports. Some cards featured individual athletes and others featured complete teams. The set includes a number of very minor sports, such as roller skating, chess, walking, quoits, punting, and weight lifting.
Featured here are the likes of tennis Hall of Famer Suzanne Lenglen, boxing champion Joe Beckett, and early golf champion, Arthur Havers, among many other recognized champions.
At 75 cards, this was one of the larger UK tobacco card issues as many sets were limited to 25 or 50.
