Pre-War Boxing Card Sets

T218 Boxing Top

While boxing has lost much of its popularity over the years, it was one of the hottest sports in the pre-war card era. Baseball was becoming increasingly popular but boxing was one of the most popular sports in the U.S. And unlike baseball, the sport had a large worldwide appeal with several countries represented by stars in the sport. Because of that, there are many international issues, particularly from the UK.

As a result, boxing sets are plentiful in the pre-war time period. Boxing cards were often part of multi-sport releases but it was also so popular that, unlike football and basketball, there are numerous boxing-only sets.

There are plenty of big names found in the sets but early stars such as Jack Johnson, Jack Dempsey, Joe Louis, Gene Tunney, Max Schmeling, and Georges Carpentier are some of the biggest. In addition, within the boxing sets cataloged on this site, cards featuring boxers in training simply working out with punching bags, etc., are also included.
