N338-1 Hess California League Overview
In 1888, Hess Cigarettes distributed two sets of California League baseball players. One was the N321 set and the other is the N338 set.
The N338 Hess California League set is a scarce issue and a complete checklist is not even known at this time. The set was previously known to have 16 cards (11 different resided in Jefferson Burdick’s private collection). But four have surfaced in the past 35 years and it is unknown if more will be found.
Cards feature a sepia-tone photograph of a player in the California League. “California League” appears at the top of the cards with the product, “S.F. Hess & Co.’s Creole Cigarettes” at the bottom.
Simply put, the N338 Hess California League cards are among the rarest pre-war card issues.
