1933 Bravour-Bilder Sport Set Overview

Bravour BoxingThis large set included more than 225 cards of famous athletes in a variety of sports. They were produced for Bravour Cigarettes, a German tobacco brand.

Two sets were actually combined to make one large set. Set A included movie stars and Set B included athletes. Sports featured in the set included hockey, boxing, tennis, wrestling, and many others.

The cards were small in size with basic pictures on the front along with a card number. The card number had an A or B prefix to indicate which of the two subsets (movie stars or athletes) to which it belonged.

Backs of the cards included an advertisement for Bravour and also included prices for some of their products.

The set is headlined by numerous big names. Boxing collectors will find Hall of Famers Jack Dempsey, Gene Tunney, and Max Schmeling here. As a German set, it is no wonder that Schmeling was the very first card in the release. Tennis is anchored by legends Bill Tilden and Helen Wills. The two hockey players are German and not known to all – Gustav Jaenecke and Rudi Ball. However, Ball is an International Hockey Hall of Famer and Jaenecke, in addition to playing hockey, was also a German tennis player.

A checklist for the set can be found here. Note that while 225 cards is sometimes the number attributed to this set, there are more than that. To date, I have not seen a confirmed count.
