N526 Number 7 / Diamond S Cigar Overview
The 1889 N526 Number 7 / Diamond ‘S’ Cigar set featured players from Boston’s baseball team, the Beaneaters.
Fronts included the player’s name an a sketch while the backs included an advertisement. Ad backs can include those from either Number 7 Cigar or the Diamond ‘S’ Cigar. Others are blank.
The Diamond ‘S’ backs advertised the product as being the ‘Best 10 cent cigar in America.’ Meanwhile, the Number 7 backs stated, ‘The original and only 10 cent cigar sold everywhere for 5 cents.’
The cards were printed on thinner stock than others from the same era which were printed on thick cardboard. The maker of the issue was Howard W. Spurr & Company.
