1922 Cafe du Monde Coffee (W573) Overview
The W573 strip cards are often confused with the E120 American Caramel set. Fronts are the same, but the backs of the W573 issue are mostly blank (E120 American Caramel cards have team checklists on the backs).
Fronts include black and white images with the player’s name, position, and team. The player images are inside of a decorative, oval-shaped frame.
While almost all backs were blank, some companies were known to use these W573 cards for their own purposes. One of those was Cafe du Monde coffee. The back, shown here, includes a picture of the coffee brand’s package and calls it, ‘The Best Coffee on Earth.’
It had been previously believed that these card backs were found only for Pittsburgh players. However, the discovery of a Walter Johnson card proved this theory to be incorrect.
While the E120 set includes a total of 240 cards, that many have not yet been confirmed to be in the W573 set. And to date, only a handful of cards with the Cafe du Monde backs have been found. However, since the E120 and W573 sets are believed to mirror each other, up to as many as 240 Cafe du Monde W573 cards could also have been created. That seems unlikely, though, with only a few showing up to date.
Therefore, the checklist provided below is a theoretical one since it the same as that of the popular E120/W573 releases.
