1939 Baseball Centennial Stamp Overview
Baseball experienced its centennial anniversary in 1939 and celebrated in a variety of ways with different products. One such product released was a special U.S. postage stamp.
The stamp denomination was three cents, which was the cost to mail a one ounce letter or package at the time. That rate would hold all the way until 1958 when the cost increased to four cents.
The picture depicts a group of boys playing baseball. At the bottom, it states “Centennial of Baseball” and “United States Postage.” The left includes a baseball and bat design with 1839 and 1839 celebrating the Centennial. Below that indicates that the stamp has a three-cent value.
Overall, the stamps are pretty cool collectibles. Even better is that they’re dirt cheap. You can usually find them on eBay for as little as $2 or so and even full sheets aren’t all that much. These are great items to add to any pre-war sports collection at a price that’s next to nothing.
