1927 York Caramel Boxing Set Overview

E211 York Caramel Boxing.jpgThese black and white cards were issued by the York Caramel Company based in York, PA. The company distributed a similar issue of baseball players starting in the same year.

This set includes a total of 60 boxers. Fronts include black and white pictures of the subject as well as his name. The backs of the cards are basic with a very brief bio and a mention that the card is one of 60 in the set of the ‘most prominent prize fighters.’

The pictures on the cards were real images. However, the print quality on many was not great.

The cards do not seem to be as plentiful as the baseball counterparts. To date, PSA has graded more than 1,300 of the baseball cards and not even 100 of the boxing issues. Part of that is likely due to the fact that baseball cards are more collected and would be graded more often. However, the large discrepancy shows a pretty wide gap and a likely indication that not as many boxing cards were issued.

The set includes numerous Hall of Famers but is led by the likes of Jack Dempsey, Gene Tunney, and Max Schmeling.
