W573 Strip Cards Overview
The W573 strip cards are often confused with the E120 American Caramel set. Fronts are the same, but the backs of the W573 issue are blank (E120 American Caramel cards have team checklists on the backs).
Fronts include black and white images with the player’s name, position, and team. The player images are inside of a decorative, oval-shaped frame.
Companies were known to use these W573 cards for their own purposes. Several companies distributed them and even advertised on the backs. In particular, the W573 Cream Nut and Goodie Bread cards had an advertisement on the backs of the W573 cards for their products. Another advertiser on the backs is Leader Theatre. That name will be familiar to many pre-war collectors as they also were on the backs of W575-1/E120 cards. Finally, a third back found on W573 cards is one for Cafe du Monde Coffee.
Additionally, other variations of these exist, too. While most of these blank-backed cards are black and white, some have a sepia or green tint. Those styles are not altogether unfamiliar because those were the styles used for the National League and American League cards in the E120 set. However, most W573s are black and white so they do stand out a little and, sometimes, sell for a bit of a premium. The majority of those cards are, similar to the regular black and white W573s, not hand cut.
While the E120 set includes a total of 240 cards, that many have not yet been confirmed to be in the W573 set. However, since the two sets are believed to mirror each other, it is reasonable to suggest that 240 W573 card could also have been created.
Therefore, the checklist provided below is the same as that of the popular E120 release.
