R332 Schutter-Johnson Overview

R332 07 Hornsby.jpg

The 1935 R332 Schutter-Johnson cards included black and white cartoons of players against a red background on the fronts and a description of tips on the backs from specific players. The tips on the back were titled, “Major League Secrets.”

A total of 50 cards are in the set and as indicated on the fronts, the images were drawn by Al Demaree, a former player himself. Demaree was also involved in other pre-war cards, also drawing the players’ bodies in the R304 Die-Cut issue which now bears his name. Demaree also provided the artwork for a 1947 Signal Oil gasoline card set featuring baseball players.

The set is not only loaded with stars but a few players appear more than once, including Hall of Famers Babe Ruth, Grover Alexander, Dizzy Dean and Kiki Cuyler. All of the big names combined with the duplication of players and the rarity of the cards makes this a difficult set to assemble.

The cards are not incredibly rare but not all that easy to find, either. To date, PSA has not graded even 1,000 of them.

Schutter-Johnson was not brand new to the sports card industry in 1935. In 1934, they created the R72 set ‘I’m going to be.’ That set included many non-sports cards featuring occupations for aspiring children, but also featured some sports including baseball.
