1933 R340 Goudey Sport Kings Premiums Overview

1933 Goudey Sport Kings PremiumThis rare issue was a short eight-card set of premium photographs. These photos were offered as a special premium by Goudey in exchange for fifty wrappers (one photo for each 50 wrappers was given).

As this REA auction outlines these are remarkably similar to Goudey’s R309-1 premiums, which were offered for (50) 1933 Goudey baseball card wrappers. These, however, are slightly larger and include a thin green border. The checklist between the two series’ is different, too. While the R309-1 issue is strictly a baseball set, this one includes a multi-sport checklist since it was a premium for the Goudey Sport Kings set, which included athletes from a variety of sports. The major sports in the set include baseball, football, and hockey.

Like the R309-1 set, these photos included black and white images of athletes. The photos are produced on cardboard and include a cardboard easel on the back to allow it to stand up. The easels for the two series are slightly different. Ones in the R309-1 set have a rounded top while the R340 series has a flat top.

While the two issues (R309-1 and R340) are similar, the R340 set is much rarer.

Jefferson Burdick identified these cards as R340 in his American Card Catalog calling them ‘Extra Large.’ However, his belief was that six cards existed in the set while eight were identified on the Goudey Sport Kings wrappers.
