1906 R. Hill Poem Postcards Overview
These postcards featured various subjects with humorous poems. They included both sports and non-sports subjects and at least two football-related cards in the set.
These postcards are considered to be Vinegar Valentine issues. That genre includes various cards with comical or insulting depictions on them.
The main football card is titled ‘The Football Player’ and features the following poem:
Arrayed thus, his joy is complete.
All he things is to be an athlete;
And all of the knowledge
That he gains in college
Shows his brains have gone into his feet.
A second football subject is included as well. This one is called ‘The College Girl’ and features a collegiate fan of football. Her room includes pennants of Ivy League schools as well as pictures of football players.
Collectors should also take note that a similar set was also created by the Illustrated Postcard Company of New York. The cards have a nearly identical look but those include more elaborate backgrounds and the pictures have a flat bottom border, separating the picture from the poem. In addition, a similar series was also created in 1907 by the Rose Company. Those feature cartoon pictures and poems as well but are not numbered and have decorative borders.
