1927 Player’s Football Caricatures by Mac Set Overview

This is one of the many tobacco card issues produced by Player’s in the 1920s and 1930s.

This set includes a total of 50 rugby and soccer cards. Most of the rugby and soccer cards are easily distinguishable either by the goal posts (which are present on the rugby cards) or the shape of the ball, if pictured.

The cards have full color caricatures of players in a variety of poses. The fronts have white borders, the player’s name, and the Player’s Cigarettes name. Like many other international sets, only the player’s first and middle initials are provided in some instances. Players in the set appear on a playing field against a beige background.

The artwork on the fronts is accompanied by an artist’s name of ‘MAC’, who provided artwork for other similar international series’. This set is similar to a 1926 Player’s set called Football Caricatures by RIP with those images provided by a different artist.

Backs include the ‘Football Caricatures by Mac’ headline at the top and mention there are a total of 50 cards in the set. The majority of the space on the back is used for a biography of the player. The bottom includes the John Player and Sons tobacco brand name and mentions the cards were issued by the Imperial Tobacco Company of Great Britain and Ireland, Ltd.

Like many international sports issues out of the UK, these cards are often found in very good condition as collectors often took care of their cards are stored these in albums.

The cards are a standard tobacco size, similar to other international issues, measuring just less than 1 1/2″ wide and a little larger than 2 1/2″ tall.
