Hi Henry’s Minstrel Baseball Contest Trade Card Overview

Hi Henry Minstrel Trade CardThis is a trade card promoting a theater show.

The card advertised the Hi Henry’s Premium Minstrels Baseball show. The Hi Henry Minstrels first appeared in 1879 and they played at shows across the country, according to this site.

Pictured on the card is a scene of black baseball players. A batter is depicted hitting an umpire with a bat. Meanwhile, another fielder is in the scene smiling with a catcher standing behind the batter with a cage over his face serving as a mask of sorts. The card mention’s what was presumably the name of the show, ‘Great Baseball Contest.’

The lithograph on the cards was done by the Great Western Show Pr. Eng. and Lithograph Company in St. Louis.
