1928 Greiners Bread Overview
This rare set of cards includes black and white images of baseball players on the fronts along with their name and a card number at the bottom. In fact, they are virtually identical to the W502 Game Backs strip cards.
The cards utilize the same pictures and the only differences are that the fronts of the Greiners Bread cards place the player’s name and card number inside of a box while the W502s do not. And instead of the game backs, the Greiners Bread cards had a promotion surrounding their products.
Greiners Bread cards advertised that a loaf of their ten-cent bread would be given for each Babe Ruth card. If someone managed to collect an entire 60-card set, they would receive ten loaves of bread. As stated on the backs, cards were found in their bread, pies, and pastry products.
Today, these cards are incredibly rare. Only a few exist but the checklist is easily linked to the W502 cards for a few reasons. First, the pictures and player numbers of the few cards found to date correspond perfectly with those in the W502 issue. In addition, that set has 60 cards and the backs of these cards state there are 60 in the entire set as well.
Finally, there are some slight print variations in the advertisement on the backs.
