V352 Wide Pen (Canadian Goudey) Overview
The American Card Catalog lists a V352 issue (called ‘Baseball Photos’). Author Jefferson Burdick noted that the set is similar to the R314 Goudey wide pen set, but instead of only American players, said the set contained both U.S. and Canadian players.
Many collectors credit the R314 set as having five total types and do not recognize the V352 set. However, it appears that Type 4 and Type 5 should be classified as V352 for reasons I outlined in this article. Those photos are generally believed to have been printed in 1937. For that reason, the V352 photos are likely 1937 issues.
World Wide Gum?
The V352 photos could have been produced by the World Wide Gum Company. Some would even argue that is likely.
The World Wide Gum company is theorized as a potential distributor since they had printed the nearly identical cards from the 1933 and 1934 Goudey baseball card sets in Canada. Adding to the mystery is that the R314 Type 4 and Type 5 photos do not have the ‘Litho in USA’ caption printed in the borders of the Type 1 photos.
That indicates they could have been printed outside the country in Canada.
