1880s New York Illustrated Champions Cabinets Overview

These cabinet cards were distributed by the New York Illustrated News. Printed in the late 1880s, they were cataloged as M125 in Jefferson Burdick’s American Card Catalog. He calls them the ‘Prizefighter Cabinets’ in that book.

The set is called the Champions series as either ‘Champions’ or ‘The Champions’ is found at the bottom of the cabinets. Both boxers and wrestlers are found in the series, among others. The cabinets have sepia images of subjects along with distinctive black borders.

Today, like most 1880s cabinets, these are tough to come by. They do surface from time to time but are not readily seen.
