1936 Alfa Olympics Overview

1936 Alfa Jesse Owens.jpgThis is one of the many international sets created in 1936 to commemorate the Olympics, which was held in Berlin, Germany. Unlike other sets, though, these Swedish cards are significantly different.

The Alfa cards are much rarer than many sets and also dramatically smaller. While a lot of Olympian cards from 1936 were oversized in nature, these cards are small. Measuring only about 1″ x 1 3/4″, they are significantly smaller than even standard tobacco and caramel cards. Cards picture black and white athletes from various countries and have a card number and some achievements of the subject on the back.

Many different sports are featured, including hockey, boxing, wrestling, track and field, and more. A hockey card featuring Team USA is one of the highlights for American collectors. As is the case in my Olympic issues, track and field dominates the set checklist. Among the most desirable cards in the issue are the cards featuring Jesse Owens.
