1926 Gartmann Boxing Overview
This oversized issue was issued by Gartmann Chocolates (Gartmann Schokolade), a German candy company. Like other international issues, this was a six-card subset that was part of a larger overall set.
This subset is simply called Boxer as indicated on the backs. The set is headlined by the trio of Hall of Famers, Jack Dempsey, Georges Carpentier, and Gene Tunney. The card of Tunney is notable as it is considered a rookie issue by some collectors.
The cards are tall and narrow, similar to some of the vintage Topps basketball issues of the late 1960s and early 1970s. Cards feature color pictures of boxers on the fronts and a relatively long bio of the subject on the back in brown ink.
The boxing series is #585 as indicated on the fronts and a card number is printed there as well.
The size and shape of the cards is notable. They are tall and thin, measuring 1 3/4″ x 3 11/16″ in size, almost like a miniature bookmark. The card stock is a bit thicker than traditional early candy cards.
