1935-38 Ardath Topical Interest Photocards Overview
These cards were printed over a series of years by Ardath Tobacco Company. The company issued these cards in their Kings cigarettes products.
Cards are black and white and have a glossy finish. They more closely resemble American gum issues in shape as they are more of a square instead of the typically more narrow cigarette cards. Backs include a biography of the athlete featured and indicates that these photocards were ‘a continuous series of topical interest.’
The massive issue includes hundreds of cards. The majority of these seem to be soccer cards. The overall set is broken up into eight subsets:
- Series A
- Series B
- Series C
- Series D
- Series E
- Series F
- Series Z
- Supplementary Subset
Subsets A through F include soccer cards. Of most interest to other collectors is Subset Z. That subset includes athletes from a wide range of sports, including boxing, tennis, golf, and soccer, among others. While several notable athletes are included, the highlight of the set is an early card of boxing great Joe Louis. Louis’ card is generally the most expensive one in the series.
Albums for the cards were also available and sold by tobacco dealers.
