1938 Churchman’s Boxing Personalities Overview
The 1938 Churchman’s Boxing Personalities set is one of the more common pre-war issues for that sport. Churchman is a British tobacco brand and was part of the Imperial Tobacco Company.
The release is a popular one for collectors. It not only features real images of boxers instead of depictions, but also includes some of the legends of the sport.
Headlining the set are Jack Johnson, Jack Dempsey, and Joe Louis, but there’s a lot more here, too. Other big names featured are Georges Carpentier, Gene Tunney, Max Schmeling, and many more. In addition to the fighters, the final 11 cards are dedicated to referees and executives, such as promoters and managers.
The set includes black and white photos of boxers on the front. The back has the Boxing Personalities name as well as a biography and a card number.
This issue is relatively easy to find from vintage dealers – particularly those that focus on boxing. It isn’t dirt cheap because of the large number of stars but is very affordable.
