1930s Magniez-Baussart Sports Aces Overview

Magniez-Baussart Boxing BackMagniez-Baussart BoxingThis release was the work of Magniez-Baussart Chocolates, a candy company based in France.

A multi-sport issue, several types of athletes are represented, including boxers and wrestlers. The pictures are printed in black and white. Fronts of the card include a photo with the subject’s name at the bottom and sport at the top. Also at the bottom is a particular feat or title for the subject.

Backs include an advertisement for the company and also give us a name for this set – Les As Des Sports. Roughly translated to English, that means ‘Sports Aces.’ I expect it is similar to Goudey’s 1933 Sport Kings set, which sought to identify some of the top athletes in a variety of sports.

I have not yet been able to identify all of the sports included in the set. However, at a minimum, it includes boxing, wrestling, and aviation.

Any cards from the set are tough to find in the U.S. Thus, even commons can be heavily desired and can sell for $10 or more. That is particularly true with the boxers as they are pursued by type collectors.
