1934 Churchman Three Jovial Golfers in Search of the Perfect Course Set Overview

This humorous set was issued by W. A. & A. C. Churchman for their tobacco products.

The formal name of the set, Three Jovial Golfers in Search of the Perfect Course, is rather wordy. It’s often shorted to Three Jovial Golfers by collectors and dealers.

Cards featured cartoon images of various golf courses. In addition, a golfer was pictured on the fronts where a story began and was continued on the back. The descriptions on these cards were generally humorous in nature and discussed the plights of participants playing a round of golf.

Backs of the cards were printed using black and green ink. They also indicated there were a total of 36 cards in the set and included the Churchman name, which was absent from the front.

Finally, two variations of these cards exist. One has a standard back featuring the rest of the story continued from the front. The second has that story as well but also has a green overprint with one of the names of the three golfers – Mr. Everyman, Mr. Rabbit, and Mr. Tiger. The green overprinted cards are significantly rarer and generally more valuable.
