D327 Holsum Bread Overview

e121The 1920/1921 D327 Holsum Bread set was an issue of 80 different baseball cards. The set, issued by the Weil Baking Company, was produced for their Holsum Bread brand. The exact date is unknown as some credit this as a 1920 set while others say it is a 1921 issue.

Adding to the intrigue of the black and white cards, which are similar to the E121 set, is that they were apparently part of a game. Backs of the cards state that the game consists of 80 different baseball stars with one packaged in each loaf of Holsum Bread. No further instructions about the game are listed on the card.

In addition to the game reference on the back, the H. Weil Baking Company is printed along with their address – 4914 Prytania Street.

While 80 cards are mentioned in the set, more than 80 have been discovered.

D327 Holsum Bread Types

Holsum Bread Back.jpgTwo different Types of D327 Holsum Bread backs are found. The easiest way to tell the two apart is in the font spacing of the company name, “H. Weil Baking Company.”

One type has the words closer together and the other has the words spread apart with “H.” and “Company” close to the borders.

The second type with the words closer together is the more difficult version to find. In addition, not all of the cards in the known checklist have been found with both types of backs.

The version pictured here is the one with the words farther apart.
