P2 Sweet Caporal Pins Overview
The 1910-12 P2 Sweet Caporal Pin set is easily the most popular of the pre-war baseball pin issues. With a total of more than 200 pins, it has a massive checklist, which makes it difficult to put together an entire set.
While there are about 150 different players included, the actual set consists of a little more than 200 pins because of variations. Several players have both small letter and large letter variations.
The set, identified in the American Card Catalog as the P2 Sweet Caporal pin set, has the set being produced in 1911. While an exact date of production has not been confirmed, most collectors accept this issue as being produced between 1910 and 1912.
Pins include a player image and team name on the front with an ad for Sweet Caporal Cigarettes on the back.
The set includes numerous big time stars, such as Cy Cobb, Walter Johnson, Christy Mathewson, and Cy Young. Many of the images were used in the popular T205 tobacco card issue.
Despite the age, the pins are extremely affordable. Commons can be purchased for as little as $10 or so – sometimes even less. One downside is that the pins are extremely small. Not even one inch in diameter, that likely is a contributing factor in keeping interest in this set down for more mainstream card collectors.
