R312 Colored Photos Overview

R312 07 Bordagaray Earnshaw.jpg

The R312 set is a mysterious issue containing 50 different cards. The cards (or photos) are nearly 4″ x 6″ and feature a number of players with pastel/color fronts and replica signatures.

The manufacturer is unknown and the set is identified as R312 in the American Card Catalog. The set sometimes goes by other names, but is called the ‘Colored Photos’ set in the Catalog. There, they are catalogued as a National Chicle Gum issue. However, there is no maker or distributor marking printed on them.

While many of the photos include only a single player, many include two or more.

Most have their name printed in a cursive type of font, but a few have typed captions instead. It should be noted that the written names are not replica signatures – only the player’s name in a cursive font.

Numerous stars are found in the set but the legendary Babe Ruth is not among them.

The photos are not printed on a thick, traditional card stock. Thinner in stock, these are damaged quite easily.
