R326 1938 Goudey Big League Movies Overview

With each passing year, Goudey’s products became more and more diverse. In 1933, 1934, and 1935, the company produced colored trading cards. 1936 saw them add black and white trading cards and their wide pen premiums. In 1937, there was the Knot Hole game and miniature movies. And in 1938 along with the Heads Up trading cards, they added a small series of movie booklets.

The 1938 R326 Goudey Big League Movies set was a repeat of the 1937 Goudey Thum Movies issue to some degree. There were only the same 13 movies but in 1938, Goudey created two separate parts for each movie. That meant there were 26 cards in the release instead of the 13 produced in 1937.

The set of movie booklets also had a different look on the outside. A black and white image of the player featured in the movie was included in a circle with “Big League Baseball Movies” printed at the bottoms. The top included the name of the player featured, the title of the movie, and indicated whether it was Part 1 or Part 2 of the movie. Collectors were then encouraged to find the other missing corresponding part to have the full movie.

One interesting thing about the set is that both Joe DiMaggio and Vince DiMaggio can be found with No. 4 – at least in terms of the pictures since both state they are of Joe DiMaggio.
