1928 Tabacalera La Morena Overview
The 1928 Tabacalera La Morena set is a Spanish issue featuring various athletes. Included are several baseball cards, including Babe Ruth and a card of both Ruth and teammate Lou Gehrig. Hall of Famers Ty Cobb, Christy Mathewson, and John McGraw are also in the release.
Overall, the cards have a weird, distinctive look. Fronts of the cards feature actual photographs and are printed in black and white with spots of color. Backs include some Spanish text as well as the player’s name and card number. The cards are believed to be printed in El Salvador.
Of note is a dual card of Ruth and Gehrig. As described by the Mile High Card Company, this may be the only card with an actual picture featuring the two together from their playing days. The two are featured several times in this set.
In addition to baseball, other athletes are featured, including tennis players such as Bill Tilden, Suzanne Lenglen, Helen Wills, and Rene Lacoste. Their cards are numbered 184 through 187.
The set has the same checklist as the 1928 Sociedade Industrial dos Tabacos de Angola set. The only difference between the two is that this set has color tints added while that one is purely black and white.
