E220 National Caramel Overview
The E220 National Caramel set is comprised of a total of 120 cards. These have a similar look to the 1920s era American Caramel cards with black and white images on the fronts and a brief advertisement on the back.
Backs read “This set consists of pictures of 120 of the leading base ball stars of the American and National Leagues made only by National Caramel Company, Lancaster, Penna.”
The back advertisement uses the same words, but some slight variations have been discovered.
The cards are similar in appearance to other candy issues of the time period. However, these are harder to find than most of the other American Caramel issues. They mostly resemble the E121 American Caramel set as well as the E122 American Caramel issue. Backs are basically the same with the exception of reading they are from the National Caramel Company instead of the American Caramel Company. The fronts are very similar, too. But they have a less ‘formal’ type of font and the border extends around the player’s name and team print at the bottom. E121s have only a border around the picture. The box, however, is similar to the ones found on E122 cards.
It should be noted that the subject of the exact date of production for these cards has never been completely laid to rest. Some list them solely as 1921 issues while others believe they were printed later in another year or over a period of years. 1921-23 has become sort of an accepted range and has been used here.
