E135 Collins-McCarthy Overview
The Baseball Hall of Fame was not created until 1936, but Collins-McCarthy tried to establish its own Hall about 20 years earlier.
The 1917 E135 Collins-McCarthy cards were black and white with player images, names, positions, and teams on the front along with a card number. The backs stated that the card was one of 200 in the set comprising “Baseball’s Hall of Fame.”
Backs also stated that cards were distributed by the Collins-McCarthy based in San Francisco, CA.
Some backs, however, were different. First, there are a blank-backed issue of these cards as well. In addition, along the same lines, the same cards were used for other companies’ sets, including H801-8 The Boston Store, D350 Standard Biscuit, D328 Weil Baking, and the unclassified Merchants Bakery issue.
Notably, while the cards looked like others, as indicated above, the E135 issue had a somewhat thick gloss on the fronts. Note that some photograph/variation issues exist in this set as well.
Numerous key cards appear in the set, including the legendary Shoeless Joe Jackson.
