1939-41 V301 O-Pee-Chee Photos Overview
In 1939-40, a set of 100 5″ x 7″ photographs were printed by a currently unknown manufacturer. The series has been accredited to O-Pee-Chee (including in the American Card Catalog), but no definitive proof exists that they produced them.
That 1939-40 set (known as V301-1) included a total of 100 black and white photos that were largely generic in nature. Other than a picture of a player, his name, team, and card number, there was nothing else included. No printing of any kind existed on the back.
The photos in the two sets vary a little. Most of the pictures were vertical shots but a few used horizontal pictures instead. And while may included pictures of players in uniform, some in the V301-1 set did not, showing them in formal clothing. Any photos depicting players in a suit or other formal clothing, therefore, can be tied to the V301-1 issue.
O-Pee-Chee followed this set up with a second series in 1940-41 (V301-2). That set was tied to the previous year’s issue because card numbering started at 101, picking up where the first set ended. These photos, however, were slightly different. Instead of black and white pictures, sepia photographs were printed. Several of the players were repeated in this set.
