1936 Olympiade Overview
This was one of the many German tobacco card sets that were issued surrounding the 1936 Olympics, hosted by the country.
The cards were issued by several companies, including Sidol, Sigella, and Lodix.
The set includes a total of 144 cards and is significantly rarer than many of the other sets out of Germany. Highlighting the set are a total of four cards of the legendary track and field star Jesse Owens. As was the case in some other sets, Owens was a main attraction and featured on several different cards.
But there’s more to the set than Owens. German leader Adolf Hitler was also featured on four cards. In addition, major sports are also included, such as ice hockey, boxing, and wrestling. A single ice hockey card is known but the set includes about a dozen total boxing and wrestling cards. Unlike some other sets, basketball is not featured, even though it was an Olympic sport.
Fronts have full color images with white borders while there are an assortment of backs, due to the various brands that distributed these cards. There are even multiple backs within the brands as I have observed at least two different backs for Lodix.
Many common cards in the set sell for only a $1-$2, despite their rarity. But cards of Owens can sell for hundreds, depending on the condition.
