R313A Gold Medal Foods Overview

The 1934 Gold Medal Foods set is a variation of sorts of the R313 National Chicle series. While many pre-war collectors are only aware of one type of Gold Medal Foods photos, there are actually two.

The first set, R313A, includes 12 black and white photo cards with replica signatures on the fronts. Cards featured players from the 1934 World Series teams, the Detroit Tigers and St. Louis Cardinals (the Gashouse Gang). The photos are thin and difficult to distinguish from the R313 National Chicle photos but the 12 pictures are distinctly different, however.

For one thing, the R313 National Chicle set was released in 1936 – two years after these. As a result, some of the players in the R313A set were not even featured in the later National Chicle set. In addition, any players that are in both sets have different photographs.

A second type of Gold Medal photos is available as well. These photos are others featuring different players than the ones from the World Series teams in R313A, as discussed here.
