R313A Gold Medal Foods Overview
The 1934 R313A Gold Medal Foods set includes 12 black and white photo cards with replica signatures on the fronts. Cards featured players from the 1934 World Series teams, the Detroit Tigers and St. Louis Cardinals (the Gashouse Gang).
The photos are thin and difficult to distinguish between the R313 National Chicle series. The 12 photos are distinctly different, however.
For one thing, the R313 National Chicle set was released in 1936 – two years after these. As a result, some of the players in the R313A set were not even featured in the later National Chicle set. In addition, any players that are in both sets have different photographs.
It should be noted that while 12 cards are most commonly considered as making up the complete set checklist, others have been found as well with some checklists including as many as 30 cards known, as discussed here. The additional players that have been identified are not members of the World Series teams as the others are.
Interestingly enough, this issue could be better classified as an F-Card (Food) issue.
R313A Gold Medal Foods Checklist
While acknowledging the other cards that may be considered part of this issue, for the time being, I am including only the 12 known checklisted cards that most commonly make up a complete set.
Others exist, but may be better classified as a separate issue from R313A since this set is considered to be the World Series set by most collectors.
