1923-24 FC24 Crescent Selkirks Overview

Crescent Ice Cream produced this set featuring players from the Selkirks Hockey Club. The cards are scarce and not seen too often.

Jefferson Burdick categorized a 14-card Crescent hockey set in his American Card Catalog. The only problem is he didn’t identify the year or team and Crescent produced three separate 14-card hockey sets from 1923-25, so it remains unknown which set he was referring to. Thus, I have categorized all three of the Crescent sets (including this one) as FC24 issues.

The card fronts feature black and white player images along with the player’s name. His position was also listed at the bottom and at the top in an arc, the Selkirks name was printed. Backs not only carried the card number, but as was common in the time period, made a special offer for collectors that completed an entire set. Those collectors could bring the set of cards to the plant for a free brick of ice cream. Collectors assembling three sets could receive a hockey stick.

To help cut back on the number of prizes given out, companies often shortprinted a specific card so that not too many complete sets could be assembled. That appears to have been the case here as No. 6 is not only rare but, to date, entirely unknown.

In 1924, the company created a second set of cards as well.
