W503 Strip / Caramel Overview

W503 01 Bush.jpg

The 1922 W503 cards set includes black and white player images on the fronts with blank backs. Fronts also include player names, teams, and a card number.

Of particular note is that the cards were not hand cut and therefore, not actually strip cards. Jefferson Burdick classified them as such in the American Card Catalog but that is likely an error. It has been mostly accepted that these were distributed with some sort of candy/caramel product and should be classified as an E-Card.

Some may place this in the E-UNC category as it was uncategorized by Burdick as a caramel card. Nevertheless, its official designation here remains as a W-Card as that was its original clarification and is what it still is widely is recognized as today.

The cards are extremely rare. PSA and SGC have only graded about 130 at the time of this publication with SGC grading the majority of those.
