E94 George Close Candy Overview
The E94 George Close Candy set includes 30 different players.
Fronts are colorful with an image of the player as well as their name and team, looking similar to other candy issues of the same era. Backs include the header the full checklist of 30 cards.
While Close Candy cards already a rare issue, some backs are printed with rare overprint slogans and messages by the company. This allowed the company to have some form of advertising since the Close Candy name does not appear anywhere else on the card otherwise.
All of the overprints were unique but mostly related to the George Close Candy and its products. The lone known exceptions are cards with an overprint stamp for Blome’s Chocolates, a candy company located in Baltimore.
The set included a number of color backgrounds for the players. Like some other sets, most, if not all, players could be found with different colored backgrounds. So while 30 cards are recognized in the set, a true master set likely contains hundreds if you account for the various colored backgrounds for each player.
Pictures of all of the overprints are shown below.
