J.I. Austen / Bernhardt Wall College Girl Athletes Postcards Overview
These postcards were similar to other issues produced around the same time period.
Each postcard featured a female with some sort of sporting equipment while wearing a sweater and representing a college. College names are not printed on the postcards but most are relatively easy to tell given the color combinations of the clothing. Major sports in the series include football and baseball.
Backs include a simple, traditional postcard layout without a divider line. The back was to be used solely for the mailing address so you will sometimes see these postcards with messages written on the front.
Artwork was done by Bernhardt Wall, who designed thousands of pieces of artwork for cards. The publisher was the J.L. Austen Company, was based out of Chicago and identified on the fronts or backs.
