1936-37 V304-D O-Pee-Chee Overview
A total of five different sets have all been designated as V304 O-Pee-Chee cards. The Each set (series) has its own separate designation – V304-A, V304-B, V304-C, V304-D, and V304-E. These series designations are printed on the backs of the cards along with a card number. As with previous years, the card numbering continued with the last issue – in this case, with the V304-C set.
While others in the series included some color, the 1936-37 cards are fully black and white. It is the only one in the entire series with that distinction. As was the case from the the V304-C set, the cards included only the player’s last name.
The most interesting aspect of the cards is that they were die-cuts. Many collectors removed the background part, leaving only the die-cut portion of the card. These, obviously, are worth a little less than if the card is fully intact.
The cards also mirrored the layout/3D feature as O-Pee-Chee’s 1937 set. It may not have been a popular one as the ‘pop-up’ card design was abandoned by the next season.
It is notable that some of the images from this set were seen in other series’. For example, Howie Morenz’s card has the same picture that was used on his V304-A card.
Notably, O-Pee-Chee also went to a larger set for this series. After only 24 cards appeared in the V304-B and V304-C sets, V304-D upped the total to 36.
