1933-34 V304-A O-Pee-Chee Overview

V304A 13 Ace Bailey.jpg

A total of five different sets have all been designated as V304 O-Pee-Chee cards. The Each set (series) has its own separate designation – V304-A, V304-B, V304-C, V304-D, and V304-E. These series designations are printed on the backs of the cards along with a card number.

These cards were printed during the same 1933-34 season as the V304-B cards were and included different players. Because V304-A contained most of the bigger stars, including Ace Bailey, Howie Morenz, and King Clancy, the upcoming V304-B set is not as impressive from a checklisting standpoint.

Cards are colorful with bold backgrounds, a player image, and the player’s name. A large star is behind the player with surrounding smaller stars and there are several background colors for the cards, including orange, red, green, and blue. Players can be found with more than one of those colors making a master set a fairly large one. The player’s name is printed at the bottom in a name plate of sorts with two bold black lines above and below it.

In addition to the series designation and card number, backs include bilingual biographies in English and French. Backs give us a name for this set — simply calling them, “National League Hockey Stars.”

These cards have the same look as the V304-B set. And since they are from the same season, 1933-34, they probably are better as grouped with that V304-B set, anyway. However, since they are called Series A on the backs (and because other series’ also have their own series letter), they are considered as a separate issue.
