1922 V89 Paterson Overview
The V89 William Paterson set is a 50-card issue from the early 1920s. While mostly credited as a 1922 issue, the set could have been produced in 1923 or 1924 as well.
The cards feature black and white photographs of baseball players with a number, player name, and team name on the front. Fronts also confirm that the set was produced by William Paterson Limited in Brantford, Canada.
The set includes several stars and is headlined by Babe Ruth, Ty Cobb, and Walter Johnson. The backs of the cards are blank and other stars that are included are Edd Roush, Rube Marquard, George Sisler, Miller Huggins, Tris Speaker, Grover Alexander, Frankie Frisch, Max Carey, Waite Hoyt, Burleigh Grimes, Eddie Collins, John McGraw, Rabbit Maranville.
And while not a star, also notable in the set is a card of Wally Pipp – the man replaced by Lou Gehrig before he began his famous ‘Iron Man’ streak of consecutive games played.
Overall, the cards are incredibly scarce. While PSA has graded at least one of every known card, in many cases, they have only graded a single example.
