1911-12 C55 Hockey Overview
The 1911-12 C55 set is one of the earliest hockey tobacco card issues. The set is anchored by hockey stars Georges Vezina and Art Ross – both of whom have trophies named after them in the National Hockey League.
Unlike many early tobacco issues, the C55 hockey cards are numbered. Card numbers were not only printed on the fronts but also on the backs. While there are 45 players with cards in the set, some collectors consider the set to be complete at 46 cards since there are two variations of Walter Smaill’s No. 27 card.
While it isn’t completely known who produced these cards, the distributor is believed to be Imperial Tobacco – the same company that produced the C46 baseball card set.
PSA has graded nearly 5,000 of these cards.
