1936 Carreras Famous Airmen and Airwomen Set Overview

This set of tobacco cards is not well known to many collectors. But it is probably one of the more notable aviation sets in the pre-war era for the big names that it includes.

A total of 50 cards are included in the release. Card fronts are really two parts — one including an image of a particular aviator and a second featuring an image of their aircraft. Backs of the cards include the Famous Airmen & Airwomen title at the top and indicate the series includes 50 cards.

Like many international sets, the backs include short writeup of the subject. The bottom has the Carreras, Ltd. name and states that the cards can be kept in a special Carreras album for one penny. The album was available from tobacco dealers.

The set includes some of the biggest names in aviation, including Amelia Earhart — one of the few contemporary trading cards of her. The card is one of her most common issues and typically starts in the $15-$20 range. Other big names in the set include Orville Wright of the Wright Brothers (brother Wilbur died in 1912 after contracting Typhoid Fever), Admiral Byrd, and Charles Lindbergh.

While the cards are relatively inexpensive, a reprint set of this release was also created.
