Chocolat Meurisse Sport Serie Trade Cards Overview

Chocolat Meurisse Hockey Trade CardChocolat Meurisse, a French chocolate manufacturer, produced a set of trade cards covering a variety of topics. Most were non-sports related but at least one sports set, Serie (Series) 1, is known.

To date, I have not seen a complete checklist for this set and but it contains six cards. The set contains cards for hockey, golf, and tennis.

The hockey card is the first card in the entire set as it is No. 1 in Series I. The card features a color lithograph of players skating and the Chocolat Meurisse name is at the top. As many old hockey images do, the scene depicts the game being played with a ball instead of a traditional puck. The golf card features a foursome of golfers and a tennis card depicts a man and woman playing.

The back of the card has a large advertisement for the manufacturer. A 1905 date is sometimes referenced for this set but I have seen this specific set dated to a few different years in the early 1900s. 1906 seems to be the most widely-used date. Also of note is that a distinguishing characteristic between this set is the presence of equipment related to the card depicted on a red banner on the front.

Fronts include colorful, lithographic depictions of early sports. The back also mentions that collectors should ask merchants for the Meurisse album, which could be used to store the cards.
