1935 and 1936 Hamlins Saf-T-Shav Chicago Cubs and White Sox Premium Photos Overview
In 1935 and 1936, Hamlins Wizard Oil Company created a pair of photograph premiums for its shaving cream company. Hamlins Saf-T-Shav was a brand of ‘greaseless’ shaving cream that was made especially for use with safety razors, according to the company.
The photos included team pictures of both the Chicago cubs and Chicago White Sox in each year. That made sense because Hamlins was based in Chicago with an address on W. Huron Street.
In 1935, the photos included black and pictures with replica signatures at the bottom. In 1936, the photos were again black and white but had printed names at the bottom. Pictured here are the two Cubs photos.
I haven’t seen how these were distributed but we know they were shipped in the mail. Photos came to the recipient packaged in an envelope that was marked as enclosing a picture. They were sent from Hamlins’ address in Chicago.
