1930s Square Deal Joe Medwick Photo Overview

Square Deal Oil Joe MedwickThis card features St. Louis Cardinals Hall of Famer Joe Medwick. It was apparently some type of promotional card for the Square Deal Oil Company.

Square Deal Oil Company gas stations were located throughout the Midwest. On the photo, they are listed as a Phillips 66 distributor. The top of the photos read that they are compliments of the Square Deal Oil Company.

Medwick is pictured in his Cardinals uniform in a black and white picture. The backs of the photos are blank. They were likely used as some sort of personal appearance giveaway as some copies contain his autograph at the bottom in a large border area designed for signatures.

The dating of this photo is currently unknown. While it is generally referred to as a 1930s issue with a picture of Medwick in his playing days, this photo pictured here has Medwick’s signature with a date from 1952. The photos could have been printed in the 1930s and signed later, obviously. But more information is needed regarding the date of this issue.
