1912 PM5 Whitehead and Hoag Pacific Coast League Pins Overview
This extremely rare set of pins features baseball players from the famous Pacific Coast League.
The pins are small, measuring only about 3/4″ in diameter. While most are in black and white, some were printed in blue ink. The design of the pin is incredibly basic. A player’s picture (either in black or blue ink) was printed on the front with his team and ‘P.C.L.’ at the top for ‘Pacific Coast League.’ The bottom simply had the player’s name.
The backs have a paper inset, stating that they were made by Whitehead & Hoag. That company is well-known in pin circles and produced a variety of sets for different manufacturers.
It is possible that more of these pins could exist today if not for a contract snag. The pins were apparently pulled from production in a promotion due to a conflict with an exclusive agreement for using the photos of players in the league.
