Palmin Flanzenbutter Moderne Sports Overview
Palmin Flanzenbutter was a brand of coconut oil in Germany. They produced numerous trading cards covering a variety of topics in the late 1800s and early 1900s.
One set was called ‘Moderne Sports’ and it depicted various sports of the time period. Hockey is the only one of the four major American sports I have seen in the issue. As many old hockey images do, the scene depicts the game being played with a ball instead of a traditional puck. Technically, that sport was ‘bandy’ but often referred to as hockey as ice hockey developed.
The back states that the hockey card is No. 4 in the 35th Series and also introduces a special offer. Any collector sending in 200 of the cards would receive a special album. Another type of book was offered in exchange of 100 cards.
Beyond the Big Four sports, tennis is also included in the set.
