1923-24 Cigarros Billiken (Billiken Cigarettes) and La Moda Overview
Produced in Cuba, the 1923-24 Billiken Cigarettes set features various Cuban baseball players. While more commonly known as the Billiken Cigarettes issue, the same cards are also found with La Moda advertising on the back. The La Moda cards are significantly rarer.
The cards are black and white and relatively plain with an image on the front and the player’s name and team printed at the bottom. Four teams were included in the set – Almendares, Habana, Marianao, and Santa Clara – and each team has cards of 15 players.
In Spanish, backs read “This beautiful collection of photographs consists of all national sports.”
The maker of the cards appear to be Villaamil, Santalla, y Ca, a name printed on the backs.
