1927-28 La Mallorquina Caramels Overview

1927-28 Mallorquina 14 Brown.jpg

Pronounced ‘Ma-your-keen-ah’, this set was produced in Cuba. The set features Cuban baseball players. Most of the players in the set were only amateurs but some did play professionally.

The diminutive size makes them somewhat similar to another foreign issue – the even-smaller 1930 Baguer Chocolate set. The cards are tiny, measuring only about an inch tall and less than an inch wide. The front includes a black and white player image and his name and a card number at the bottom. The back reads “La Mallorquina Caramelos Peloteros,” which, roughly translated, is La Mallorquina Caramels Ball Players.

However, while similar to the Baguer Chocolate cards, the checklist is the primary difference between this set and that one. The Baguer Chocolate cards pictured American major league stars. This set, instead, pictures Cuban baseball players and most of the names will not even be familiar to many collectors.

The set includes de facto rookie cards of Baseball Hall of Famers Martin Dihigo and Willie Foster.
