1934-39 Diamond Matchbooks Overview
A total of several pre-war hockey Diamond Matchbook Cover sets exist consisting of various players:
- 1934-35 U9 Diamond Matchbooks Silver
- U10 Diamond Matchbooks (Series 1)
- U10 Diamond Matchbooks (Series 2)
- U10 Diamond Matchbooks (Series 3)
- U10 Diamond Matchbooks (Series 4)
- U10 Diamond Matchbooks (Series 5)
- U10 Diamond Matchbooks (Series 6)
While there are only two colors of matchbooks (silver and tan), there are seven different types as listed above. The U9 set from 1934-35 is the only set of silver matchbooks. The others that are cataloged as U10 are all tan and were printed from 1936-39.
All of the matchbook covers have some value regardless of condition. But complete books with the matches unused generally bring a premium. Because these were matchbook covers, they are often heavily worn with creasing, tears, and other flaws.
Fronts of the matchbooks have a picture of a player on one side and the other has a short biography as well as the place to strike the matches.
Distinguishing Between Types
While the silver and tan matchbooks are easily distinguished, the six tan types have only minor differences. But they can be separated if you know what to look for.
- U10 Tan Type 1: Diamond Matchbook name is on one line above the striker and a team name is printed in the biographical box.
- U10 Tan Type 2: Diamond Matchbook name is on one line above the striker but no team name or position is printed in the biographical box.
- U10 Tan Type 3: Any non-Chicago Blackhawks players with the Made in U.S.A. print.
- U10 Tan Type 4: Any Chicago Blackhawks players with the Made in U.S.A. print, ‘Chicago Black Hawks’ below the player’s name on the front, and the team name printed in the biographical box.
- U10 Tan Type 5: Any Chicago Blackhawks players with the Made in U.S.A. print, no team name in the biographical box, and a tan line at the bottom of the back (below the match striker). These also only say ‘Black Hawks’ below the player’s name on the front just above his picture.
- U10 Tan Type 6: Any Chicago Blackhawks players with the Made in U.S.A. print, no team name in the biographical box, and a black or dark brown line at the bottom of the back (below the match striker). These also only say ‘Black Hawks’ below the player’s name on the front just above his picture.
